Yoshi_R Rants: E3- My Only Complaints

Hey everyone look it’s Yoshi_R!

This year is probably one of the first E3s in a long while that truly delivered. Whether it be with the trailer for the awesome WWII game The Saboteur or with the unexpected announcement of Golden Sun DS. This E3 has been proven to be the best since 2006, however at times I often wondered, “WTF?” With a lot of the press conferences, whether it be with Ubisoft 30 minute long speech on the new avatar game, or with the announcement of the eye toy clone Project Natal there was definitely times where I couldn’t help but wonder, "what was the point?". So I think it’s time I vent my opinions on some of these announcements and press conferences.

Nintendo: Where’s my Pikmin?

This is probably one of the biggest mysteries of E3 2009. With announcements left and right, Nintendo's press conference couldn’t have been better. The Only thing it was lacking and something everyone was expecting, was Pikmin 3. We know it is in the works, but we still haven’t seen anything about it. I’m not sure if it was because there wasn’t enough room for it, but honestly it was a bit disappointing. Especially after last year’s statement's hinting it was in the works along side with the new Mario and a new Zelda

Still Nintendo really delivered with their press conference, so I’m not going to complain much when it comes down to the.

Sony: Look at the pretty globe!

During the Sony press conference Sony showed off their latest (and probably most fail) attempt at a Wiimote clone. Was it solid? Yep, it actually looks to work better the Wii-Mote with Wii Motion plus. However what made this new controller complete fail was a glowing globe feature at the top of the controller. What’s the point? There is none, it’s just a pretty globe.

It looks like a shinning dildo…

Microsoft: Project Natal (Aka Eye toy clone 2.0)

Alright, Project Natal was probably one of the lamest excuses for innovation ever. Why do I say that? Because, this is Microsoft second try at cloning the eye toy, after their first failed attempt with the Live Vision camera. Do they really think they got anyone fooled? It’s literally a eye-toy clone from front to back. It does everything a eye-toy does… only exception being voice chat which you could use to chat with virtual characters, like Milo here … which isn’t really innovation, more than it is downright creepy.

Stop looking at me like that!

EA: Tween Games

EA really had a good conference… but there was one thing that kept it from being great. And that was the showcasing of Littlest Pet Shop and Charms Girls Club. Seriously EA? Do you think little girls are going to be watching you press conference in order to get their news on any of these two series. Both are already classified as shovel ware, I doubt any informed gamer cares about either series. Actually most gamers are probably watching you’re conference in order to see some new footage of brutal legend, or to see if Battlefield 3 is ready for launch (which doesn’t appear to be the case, but one could only dream right?).

Ubisoft: Boring People talk, I no listen.

The Ubisoft press conference is possibly one of the worst of all the conferences. Sure we got to see games like Red Steel 2 in action, but the first 30 minutes, as I mentioned before, was a extremely in-depth look at Avatar: The Last Air bender the game. Really? Does Ubisoft think we care about Avatar, let alone a game based on the live action movie. No we don’t. We cared about getting into the games we love to love (or in some cases hate) why do you need to stall when you had freaking Red Steel 2 playable is beyond me. If anything that game should have been shown those first 30 minutes, not Avatar the last air bender. In fact, Ubisoft should have just gave the rights to the game to Actvision this way we wouldn’t see anything at all. My god would that have been a blessing.

Seriously though, those first 30 minutes really made me almost change the channel. It was a huge turn off. I really don’t care how games are made, and if you want to go that in-depth do it in a bonus disk, not in a freaking E3 press conference, especially when you have bigger things you could get to.

Final Thoughts:

As great as E3 was this year, there was most certainly quite a few faults on all ends of the playing field. In the end of the day though E3 2009 will be remembered for bringing back the action, news, and booth babes back to E3.

This is Yoshi_R signing out!
