District 9 | Promising Sci Fi

District 9 is tearing it up on the RT meter and is receiving some impressive reviews. If you never heard about the movie until recently your not alone. Aside from Peter Jackson's name being touted by critics and fans very little is known about director Neill Blomkamp.

Matter of fact, aside from his limited work as a Visual Affects animator in popular TV programs such as Stargate SG-1 and Smallville, District 9 is a major leap into the mainstream without sacrificing substance. Or at least that is what has been made clear by the $37+ million grossed during its opening weekend. Peter Jackson has paired up with the young Vancouver Film School graduate to produce an impressive movie. And Blomkamp doesn't disappoint with his director skills.

And to think his directing resume consisted of short films prior to District 9. The move trailer pretty much give you an idea of what D-9 is all about. Coming from South Africa, Blomkamp fleshes out the controversial issue of apartheid in the region from 1948 to 1994 in a sci fi format that puts aliens on the receiving end of oppression.

I know, politics right? Well considering the track record of sci fi movies in the last 10 years I think people can look past that and enjoy it for what it is. There is no shortage of plot, action and emotion thrown into the mix, and a really bad ass alien weapon! After all, Bladerunner was political and was one of the best movies to come out of the 80's despite what Harrison Ford may think.
